SOCIALIZING

Most rules about socializing in the “West” hold true in the Czech Republic. Keep away from controversial subjects such as politics, religion, or other touchy topics and don’t be surprised if your Czech colleagues don’t want to “talk shop” in their free time. When in doubt, let the Czechs lead the conversation. In social settings, it’s good to keep eye contact during conversation. Czechs also like their personal space and are not keen on a lot of physical contact with people they don’t know really well.

Czechs generally prefer to meet up in public places, so expect many trips to pubs or cafés with your Czech friends before they invite you into their homes or other more private places. This is as true for a first date as it is for simply hanging out with friends.

Typically, a meeting place will be agreed upon in advance—in Brno, for example, someone might say “Let’s meet under the clock.” Unless they tell you otherwise, they mean a well-known clock that hangs on a building near the public transit junction on Česká Street in the city center. Be punctual around Czechs, even in informal situations. If you fear you’ll be late by more than ten minutes, call or text to let people know.

Map apps, like Google Maps and the homegrown Mapy.cz, are very popular here, and your companions may send you a link with the evening’s destination marked on the map for you. Many people use map apps to make the decision about where to go for the evening.
